About Swalmen

On the territory of Swalmen (municipality Roermond) lie particularly attractive landscape elements with the Meuse and Swalmdal and his expanse forest which is connected with the Brüggener and Elmpterwald in Germany.

The Swalmdal has a wealth of plants and animal species. By means of the available walking charts, which can be obtained from the travel agency in Roermond, walkers and cyclist can follow the routes through the forest at the south east of Swalmen. Here are several monumental buildings, such as castle Hillenraad, the castle farm Zuidewijk Spick and Graeterhof.

At the east of Swalmen, in the forest called; het Groenewoud, lies the open air swimming pool, called; de Bosberg.

The view of the centre of Swalmen is controlled by the stately Lambertuschurch, the Crasbornplein with several shops and the just renovated market square with several café’s and restaurants.

Swalmen has a century old history. The best proof of this provides the remains of the Naborch, castle Hillenraad and several other beautiful old monumental buildings. The of origin Romanesque `Rozenkerkje` in Asselt masters already many centuries the view of this Meuse village. Picturesque situated on the high Meuse bank is the place where the Vikings moored to plunder the richer inland countries in the past. Proof of the region rich history can be found in the museum opposite the church.

Because of its green character and the presence of the nearby lain Maasplassen (lakes) makes Swalmen an excellent municipality for (day) recreation.

Swalmen’s own weapon, which was granted in 1911, exists of a shield with two lions on it. The shield is hold by the H. Lambertus with his left hand and in his right hand he holds a bisschops staff.

Up to two years ago, particularly in the core Boukoul, there was an restriction for new build. This was a consequence of the noise pollution caused by, on German territory, lain military airport. This airport does no longer exist which allows new houses to be built.

The public transport is excellent which allows you to travel, very easily, by train or by bus to Roermond or Venlo. Now that the new motorway, the A73, is ready to use, it is also very easy to travel to and from Swalmen by car. Swalmen has got four primary schools; three are located in the core of Swalmen and one in the church village Boukoul. There is also a school for lower secondary professional education. Beside the usual activities there are several other associations, events and festivities organized which are open to everybody.

From the 1st of January 2007 Swalmen is no longer a independent municipality anymore, it has now gone up in the municipality Roermond.
